Who We Are |

Oceanz Footwear is Denise and Graham. Together we design, create and manufacture handmade leather footwear. Because of our high quality work we see ourselves more as artisans.
The Cook Street Market connection
There are 2 parts to our operation: we have a range of ethnic style, super comfortable leather jandels, sandals and boots we call “The Cook Street” range. This is in memory of the Cook Street Market in Auckland of the 70s/80s. It’s from here that Graham began his trade. He was taught by a friend who had a stall in the market. He then went on to develop his own style.
Eight years ago, back in 2000, we met and fell in love. I noticed the skill and potential in Graham’s hands and together we’ve been working towards our vision of creating fine, long lasting high quality hand-made leather footwear.
Reproduction of historical shoes
The second part of our operation is reproduction work, number 1 being the “Blue Suede shoes” as worn by W.H. Holland of the band lead by Carl Perkins (who wrote the song back in 1955). Elvis made it famous… but “Don’t stand on my blue suede shoes” as said by a young gentleman to his stunning girlfriend dancing to Carl’s band.
Along with this, the first of our projects which I’m particularly interested in is the Victorian boot which I’m modernizing with genuine snake skin.
Snake skin collection
Speaking of snake skin, we have released a range of our jandels in snake skin to jazz them up. And also added some belts to the collection.
Our location
“Opoutere Harbour looking towards the Spit”

We do all this work from our workshop in one of the most beautiful parts of New Zealand, the Opoutere Village in the Coromandel Peninsula area. We moved here for the lifestyle choice, stunningly fresh air, the bush walks and the ocean view. To relax we go fishing in an exquisite location and I like to keep a vegetable garden.
How we create the shoes
Our shoes have rivets for extra reinforcement and reinforced straps so there’s no stretch.
We also put a street wear sole on the bottom of the EVA midsole for comfort and to get longer better wear. Our materials are mostly NZ sourced to fit in with out Buy NZ made concepts.
Graham sews the shoes while I use a clicking press to cut the leather. Together we finish the shoes. Then I dispatch the footwear to you, our valued customer.
